Litanies of the Veil
Litanies of the Veil are available only to the Path of the Litanies of the Veil subclass.
Special Rule: Resonant Litanies
Some litanies allow you to reproduce an existing spell. When you use a litany that reproduces a spell that deals damage, you can replace that spell’s damage type with the type chosen with your Resonant Blade.
If you chose your weapon’s normal damage type with Resonant Blade, the spell deals force damage instead.
These litanies remain magical features. When a litany states that you cast a spell, that spell follows the normal rules for spells, including concentration if the spell requires it. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells, and they use your Reaper feature save DC.
Using a Litany at a Higher Level
When a litany allows you to cast a spell, you can cast it at a higher level if that spell has an effect at higher levels. For each spell level above the spell’s normal level, you must spend 1 additional Soul Fragment.
You cannot cast a spell in this way at a level higher than the maximum shown in the table below.
| Reaper Level | Maximum Spell Level |
|---|---|
| 3–6 | 1st |
| 7–10 | 2nd |
| 11–16 | 3rd |
| 17–20 | 4th |
If a litany restricts the spell to a particular target, such as yourself, that restriction still applies when the spell is cast at a higher level, unless the litany’s description states otherwise.
If a litany has an increased cost to use it again before a short or long rest, the additional cost for casting at a higher level is added to that increased cost.
Litany List
Lifeline Chain
When you use Damned Chain, you can target a willing allied creature instead of a hostile creature.
The target makes no saving throw and takes no damage. It is pulled in a straight line to an unoccupied space adjacent to yours, or as close as possible if no direct path allows it to reach you.
This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.
Ashen Whisper
As a reaction, you can spend 1 Soul Fragment to surround your body with ashen whispers until the start of your next turn.
Until this effect ends, opportunity attacks against you have disadvantage.
Funerary Hand
You learn the Mage Hand cantrip. If you already know it, you learn another cantrip from those offered by this tradition.
When you cast Mage Hand, the hand takes on a spectral, skeletal, or funerary appearance. You can spend 1 Soul Fragment when you cast it to make the hand invisible for the spell’s entire duration.
Cry of the Veil
As an action, you can spend 1 Soul Fragment to unleash a spectral cry at a creature you can see within 18 meters of you.
The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your Reaper feature save DC or be frightened of you until the end of your next turn.
Spectral Scythe
When you make an attack with a reaper weapon on your turn, you can spend 1 Soul Fragment to briefly extend your weapon with energy from the Veil.
The range of this attack increases by 1.50 meters. If the attack hits, it deals extra damage equal to one roll of your Dread Arts die.
Weakening Seal
When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike or a reaper weapon, you can spend 1 Soul Fragment to place a dread seal on it until the start of your next turn.
The first time the target makes a saving throw against one of your Reaper features or Litanies of the Veil before the effect ends, it subtracts one roll of your Dread Arts die from the result.
Veil Sight
As a bonus action, you can spend 1 Soul Fragment to open your senses beyond the material world for 10 minutes.
For the duration, you can see invisible creatures within 3 meters of you, provided they are not behind total cover.
Resonant Hands
As an action, you can spend 2 Soul Fragments to cast Burning Hands without expending a spell slot or using material components.
When you cast the spell this way, you can replace its fire damage with the type chosen with your Resonant Blade, as described in the Resonant Litanies rule.
Veil Bolt
As an action, you can spend 2 Soul Fragments to cast Guiding Bolt without expending a spell slot or using material components.
When you cast the spell this way, you can replace its radiant damage with the type chosen with your Resonant Blade, as described in the Resonant Litanies rule.
Touch of Ruin
As an action, you can spend 2 Soul Fragments to cast Inflict Wounds without expending a spell slot or using material components.
When you cast the spell this way, you can replace its necrotic damage with the type chosen with your Resonant Blade, as described in the Resonant Litanies rule.
Veil of Darkness
Prerequisite: 6th level
As an action, you can spend 3 Soul Fragments to cast Darkness without expending a spell slot or using material components.
Dread Passage
Prerequisite: 6th level
When you use Reaper’s Wake, you can choose a willing allied creature within 1.50 meters of the space you leave.
That creature can use its reaction to teleport to an unoccupied space within 1.50 meters of the space where you appear.
Once you have transported an ally this way, you must finish a short or long rest before you can do so again. You can use this litany again before finishing a short or long rest by spending 1 Soul Fragment.
Resonant Rays
Prerequisite: 6th level
As an action, you can spend 3 Soul Fragments to cast Scorching Ray without expending a spell slot or using material components.
When you cast the spell this way, you can replace its fire damage with the type chosen with your Resonant Blade, as described in the Resonant Litanies rule.
Shared Torment
Prerequisite: 6th level
As a bonus action, you can spend 2 Soul Fragments to bind two souls with an invisible spectral chain. This chain does not physically restrict movement, but it allows pain to pass between the linked creatures.
Choose a hostile creature you can see within 18 meters of you. It must succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your Reaper feature save DC or be linked for 1 minute.
When you use this litany, choose one of the following bonds.
Executioner’s Bond
You link the target to yourself.
While the target is linked to you this way, once between the start of one of your turns and the start of your next turn, when you take damage, you can transfer some of that pain to the linked target without using an action.
When you transfer this damage, reduce the damage you take by half the damage you would actually have taken after applying your resistances, immunities, and other reductions, rounded down. The linked target takes damage equal to the amount prevented this way.
The transferred damage is of the same type as the original damage. The linked target’s resistances, immunities, and vulnerabilities apply normally to the damage it takes.
Bond of the Condemned
You link the target to another hostile creature you can see within 18 meters of you. This second creature must also succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your Reaper feature save DC or become the other end of the chain.
While the two creatures are linked this way, once between the start of one of your turns and the start of your next turn, when you would deal damage to one of them with an unarmed strike, a reaper weapon, a Reaper feature, or a litany, you can transfer some of that damage to the other linked creature.
You choose how much damage to transfer, up to half the damage dealt, rounded down. The first creature takes the remaining damage, and the other linked creature takes the transferred damage.
The transferred damage is of the same type as the original damage. Resistances, immunities, and vulnerabilities apply separately to each creature after the damage is divided.
This litany cannot transfer damage from an attack or effect that already affects multiple creatures.
A creature linked by this litany can repeat its saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If either end of the bond is no longer affected, the litany ends.
You can have only one Shared Torment active at a time. If you use this litany again, the previous bond ends.
Breath Snare
Prerequisite: 6th level
As an action, you can spend 2 Soul Fragments to tighten an invisible chain around a creature’s breath.
Choose a creature you can see within 18 meters of you. It must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against your Reaper feature save DC or its breathing becomes short and ragged for 1 minute.
For the duration, the target suffers the following effects:
- It struggles to speak and cannot clearly express more than a few broken words.
- It has disadvantage on spell attack rolls for spells with a verbal component.
- It has disadvantage on Constitution saving throws made to maintain concentration on a spell.
This effect does not prevent it from casting spells with a verbal component.
The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Claws of the Veil
Prerequisite: 6th level
As an action, you can spend 2 Soul Fragments to slash at a creature you can see within 18 meters of you.
The target must make a Dexterity saving throw against your Reaper feature save DC. On a failed save, it takes damage equal to three rolls of your Dread Arts die + your Charisma modifier. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage.
Soul Anchor
Prerequisite: 11th level
As a bonus action, you can spend 2 Soul Fragments to anchor a creature you can see within 18 meters of you.
The target must succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your Reaper feature save DC or be unable to teleport or travel to another plane until the end of your next turn.
Circle of the Veil
Prerequisite: 11th level
As an action, you can spend 3 Soul Fragments to open a spectral circle within 18 meters of you.
Choose a point you can see within that range. Each hostile creature of your choice within 3 meters of that point must make a Dexterity saving throw against your Reaper feature save DC.
On a failed save, a creature takes damage equal to three rolls of your Dread Arts die + your Charisma modifier. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage.
Elemental Bulwark of the Veil
Prerequisite: 11th level
When you take cold, fire, radiant, or necrotic damage, or damage of the same type as your current resonance, you can use your reaction and spend 2 Soul Fragments to gain resistance to that damage until the end of the current turn.
If the damage exactly matches the type chosen with your Resonant Blade, you also gain temporary hit points equal to one roll of your Dread Arts die + your Charisma modifier.
Resonant Eruption
Prerequisite: 11th level
As an action, you can spend 5 Soul Fragments to cast Fireball without expending a spell slot or using material components.
When you cast the spell this way, you can replace its fire damage with the type chosen with your Resonant Blade, as described in the Resonant Litanies rule.
Veil Ascension
Prerequisite: 11th level
As an action, you can spend 4 Soul Fragments to cast Fly on yourself without expending a spell slot or using material components.
When you cast the spell this way, your flight takes on the appearance of your current resonance: spectral flames, suspended frost, radiant wings, necrotic mist, or invisible force.
Grave Skin
Prerequisite: 17th level
As an action, you can spend 5 Soul Fragments to cast Stoneskin on yourself without expending a spell slot or using material components.
When you cast the spell this way, your body’s appearance changes according to your current resonance: skin blackened with ash, mineral frost, radiant shards, necrotic plates, or a surface as smooth as invisible force.
Sentence of the Veil
Prerequisite: 17th level
As an action, you can spend 4 Soul Fragments to pronounce a sentence against a creature you can see within 18 meters of you.
The target must make a Charisma saving throw against your Reaper feature save DC. On a failed save, it takes damage equal to six rolls of your Dread Arts die + your Charisma modifier and is stunned until the end of your next turn. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and is not stunned.
Once you use this litany, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again. You can use this litany again before finishing a short or long rest by spending 6 Soul Fragments instead of 4.
Blight of the Veil
Prerequisite: 17th level
As an action, you can spend 6 Soul Fragments to cast Blight without expending a spell slot or using material components.
When you cast the spell this way, you can replace its necrotic damage with the type chosen with your Resonant Blade, as described in the Resonant Litanies rule.
